The winner is!

Thanks to all of you who participated in this contest.  I hope you had as much fun guessing as I had dreaming up this one.

I tried to do some research on the bowl and, although I didn’t discover much about the bowl itself, I did dig up information about the maker.  The name should be Haas and Czjek.   The spelling of the latter name varies.  The company was formed in the middle 1800s by Georg Haas, a Belgian, and Johann Czjek, a Czeck.  It continues to this day and sells porcelain and glass items from a department store in Budapest.

As for an appraisal price on the bowl?  I couldn’t determine that, but I found old porcelain pieces from Haas and Czjek valued at over one hundred dollars.  I have no idea how old this bowl is.

Now the big reveal: I paid…………….nothing for it.  Sneaky, aren’t I?  I’ve talked about a place in my little village called “The Magic Closet” where people donate items they aren’t using and pick up other items they want.  No money exchanges hands.  So I fooled all of you, but the person who came closest was Vinnie who cleverly said I paid 50 cents for the bowl.

If I had run across it at a yard sale, how much would I have paid for it?  Since I needed it for my book launch, I might have gone as high as five dollars.  If I’d just been browsing used items, maybe one or two dollars.

So Vinnie, send me your address through this website and A Secondhand Murder  will be on its way to you.
